Sonny, this might have been the toughest so far. I’ve done at least one show with all of your contestants. My winner was Radiohead. The show I did was early in their career at a club called The Library. They were the whiniest bunch of beta pricks, especially for being unknown at the time. I made a promise to myself to never purchase or even make a concerted effort to listen to anything they recorded after that evening.
Your description of the band is so colorful that I’m still laughing as I type this. I caught Radiohead during their OK Computer tour and had a blast. Then again, maybe it was the mushrooms. Either way, thank you for another entertaining story, Daniel. As annoying as your experience must have been, your comment has made my day.
I don't think any of the above bans suck musically, but I do think Bono can be annoying and obtuse (rallying people who are already struggling financially to his various causes) and Radiohead can be precious about themselves, but their hearts are in the right place. I adore Depeche Mode and don't consider them musically inferior in any way. LOVE them. I never was a grunge person, and I loathe most music from the 90s, but I did like Nirvana, and I think Kurt Cobain was an intelligent, sensitive human. Hard to vote on this one! I don't dislike any of these bands, all made formative music that was unique and interesting. I'll pick U2, because they put out a couple of middling albums and because Bono is a bit of a poseur, though, again, I don't actually hate the guy, and Boy was a powerful album back in the day, before the band's stratospheric rise to fame.
I was trying to thnk of bands that most people like at least a little bit in order to keep things interesting. I agree with everything you said, except I was definitely a grunge / Nirvana person. Looks like most people agree with your views on Bono / U2!
I find that musically they are all good bands, major differences in style between the lot. I would have to judge them by they push their politics too damn much. That goes to Bono, he gets my just shut the fuck up and sing vote.
I completely agree that Bono can be full of himself. I don’t have a problem with bands being political, though (assuming it’s not all the time, of course). Better they sing about substantive issues than the usual bubblegum bullshit.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, nothing against bands being political, hell I love Billy Bragg and I’m so not a socialist. I guess its just me getting tired of being lectured on very complex issues by people who’s concept of reality is questionable at best
Well, when you put it that way, I agree a thousand percent! Nothing grinds my gears more than people telling me how to live. Especially when it’s coming from the out of touch. High-five, dude.
I get the digs on Bono and acknowledge that in his attempts to reach for meanings and understanding he has overreached in cringy ways. Putting that aside, as I suspect Bono is a now a lightening rod for politics, I admire U2’s frequent success at reinventing their music over a long career, while maintaining their dedication to each other and their values as a band. I like everything they did up to the Pop album, which came out maybe 25 years ago.

You have a way of inspiring me.

U2 hands down, no hesitation. Bono seems insufferable.
🤣
U2, because Bono seems like the worst person I'd ever want to have a party. I love Depeche Mode!
I hear you, Sheila! I’ve always felt that way about Bono, and am surprised (in a good way) that so many others are dunking him.
