Thanks for that Sonny. I loved Welcome Back Kotter and I remember my copies of Tiger Beat Magazine with Travolta on the cover. It is a brilliant theme song, one of my favourites of the era. Great post!
Yes and he starred in one of my favourite movies, Blow Out! I wonder if he was a scientologist way back then, or if that happened later. No matter. I remember him fondly as a feathered hair teen idol.
Holy crap, Blow Out! I totally forgot about that movie. The scream! The SCREAM! Thanks for unlocking such a fond memory. Might have to rewatch it this weekend. As for Johnny Boy being a Scientologist then, I’m not sure either. But little boy me used to think he was one Cool Dude.
I was such a Travolta fan that I bought a cheap written-for-kids paperback biography about him in 1978 or ‘79. It couldn’t have been any later because we moved to another town after that, and I remember buying it before that. Anyway, it mentioned he belonged to a church I hadn’t heard of when I was a kid: Scientology.
Yes. It’s amazing to me that a kid’s book would’ve even mentioned it. I lost the book and don’t know who published it. I wonder if it was some kind of Scientology recruitment material. Yikes! Well it didn’t work on me, obviously.
When I was training on Zoom, I'd use this track for the end of the final break each day. The students came to love it and look forward to hearing it. Introducing it to a new generation!
Among other things, it inspired a comic book adaptation that combined the show's slapstick hijinks with the ability to discuss serious things the show lacked.
For some reason I will always remember Barbarino saying to some girl, "How can you like Mister Woodman? That's like likin' guck." Dumb fun for big dopes.

Thanks so much, Nadine! It’s amazing how HUGE Travolta was then, what with Kotter, Grease, and Saturday Night Fever. Really glad you liked the post!

Oof. I didn't know he was already involved in Scientology back then!

Now that’s what I call 4D teaching. Bravo!

Oh, I totally forgot about the comics! Amazing how much influence the show wound up having.

‘Dumb fun for big dopes’.
Amen, brother.
I thought that was John Lennon! 😅
LOL that’s awesome! 😂
