His adult children by Bebe Buell and Cyrinda Foxe refer themselves to being a wolf pack. Honestly this makes me sick and sad but that’s how it was and still is in the industry. Like R Kelly.
That's right. As a matter of fact, Steven started seeing Bebe while Julia was still in the picture. When Julia left, Steven brought Bebe on tour with him to Europe. She realized she was pregnant, then also realized Steven was way too heavy into drugs to be a father. So she went back to Todd Rundgren (whom she'd been seeing) and raised the baby together. The baby, of course, was Liv Tyler.
Yes I knew that story and she was seeing my husband then as well as Stiv Bators, Chris told me he used to help her take care of Liv. That was very brief but he saw Bebe in Nashville when he performed there in 2018..as old friends she would call it.
Thank you so much, Amy! I thought it was important for many reasons that I stay the hell out of the way this time and let the people involved do the talking. And yeah - Jesus.
This was brilliant strategy to write this story. You wound these together masterfully. I guess the gist of this was pretty much the way I heard the situation discussed at the time and afterwards. I can’t say anything surprised me or even sounds “off”.
One comment I would make though is her attempt to deflect blame from herself by calling up the ghosts of a “tortured childhood”, although if there is ongoing litigation I can understand it. This smells like a money grab to me. It doesn’t seem like her situation was misrepresented to her at any step of the way. She walked into a situation that once in became untenable. If there’s one thing I can speak on authoritatively after 25+ years in the business it’s the relationship of rock stars and teenage girls. I don’t know how many girls I would caution when they were waiting in the “holding pen” backstage waiting for the band to check them out. Most I would end up trying to find a cab to get them home after they’ve been tossed out in the hall, hoping their drivers license had the correct address because they were semi conscious. A sad story but just one of many I’m afraid. It will be interesting to see how this court case is resolved.
Thank you very much, Daniel. It’s a technique I haven’t used before, but felt was appropriate this time around. I’m happy and relieved to hear it was effective.
Teenage girls + rock and roll. Parts of the allure are obvious, of course. The others, not so much. How many girls have been chewed up and spit out? Too many for me to fathom. Or for my heart to take.
Steven Tyler’s 77 now. The clock is ticking. And justice moves slow.
To be fair, I grew up in LA around this time and it was normalized. The Sugar Shack was just up from my home, where Jimmy Page and others would hook up with girls from my high school.
I grew up on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco (literally) and Sausalito and the next town up, Mill Valley were literally lousy with rock stars. I said that stuff happen all the time — and I saw the trauma that inevitably followed.
"To be fair" should start to being fair to the venerable child women that are victimized.
Just because it happened in the 70s when society and certain regions were willing to look the other way doesn't make it anything less than a man taking advantage of a child who's brain development hadn't reached the point where she was truly capable of making informed consent.
1 year under the permitted age to go die a horrible death or dole it onto others in war.
We can say something is wrong without infantilizing the world today. She chose to sexy herself up and go find a rockstar to have sex with. Steven Tyler did enough bad, without making the implication behind “he raped a child,” without qualifying that it’s s 16 year old with a developed body, rather than an 11 year old.
16 is the age of consent where Steven Tyler is from
"Malum in se. The distinction is between an act that is wrong in itself, and an act that is wrong only according to our laws and mores. It is Latin." -- Mattie Ross in True Grit
It is legal to have sex with a 16 year old in New Hampshire (Tyler's home state), it is illegal in Oregon (the victim's home state). Fair enough, but let's not act like in any real moral sense, a 16 year old is a prepubescent child that doesn't know all about, nor expects to experience, the sexual acts that they engage in, thus indicating the at-fault perpetrator of a far more heinous crime that humanity near unanimously accepts vigilanty justice for.
Again? Then ban 18-20 year olds from having sex now lol.
The brain doesn’t stop developing until you’re dead in the grave. Actual scientific consensus says it isn’t fully matured until 25-30.
This is a shallow sidestep from the reality that people of all inteligence levels know the difference between right and wrong.
There are millions of all ages with low intelligence and rough childhoods -- that doesn't factor in whether or not someone can or should be held responsible for their actions. Did they make a choice? I will refrain from sharing my childhood and grades here, except to hypothesize: how did I manage to not have sex however much I may have wanted it when I was a teenager? I made a choice.
To equate a 16 year old with an 11 year old, in this regard, is infantilizing.
Ask your parents and grandparents about this discussion. 40 years ago, 16 year olds would laugh at this discussion.
I had a crush on a 16 year old when I was 19. I of course knew she was too young for me so I did not act on it at all. A year or two later she was dating and marrying someone way older.
Just because something is legal doesn’t make it right, and a 20-something rock star should not be able to take a teenager out of school. Lower age of consent laws only make sense if they’re contingent on the partners being close in age.
The 24-year-old “friend” shouldn’t have taken Diana to the show.
Let me get this straight: A 16 year old girl is too young to consent to a sexual relationship…but an 12 year old girl must be obeyed when she says she’s actually a boy and wants to have her breasts removed and started on hormone therapy.
Well, yes. That 12 year old can not start puberty blockers or hormone therapy without parental consent and participation.
They also need to go through substantial and repeated (and ongoing) psychological evaluation by both a psychologist and a psychologist.
Obviously medical doctors are also involved (in addition to the psychiatrist) to monitor and ensure that the therapies are safe.
As to breast removal (or "Top") surgery, there is no State in the United States that allows surgical sex reassignment of anyone under 18 years of age.
The low hanging fruit hypothetical you posited above literally takes years and is deliberate and is constantly monitored. BTW, Trans Youth have the highest suicide rates per capita in the US and these properly monitored therapies have been shown to reduce suicide rates among them by as much as 80%.
Not quite the same as a coked up predator who wants to wet his dick in a child.
That’s not true. Apparently top surgery is rare but still performed on girls 13-17. My query remains: Why is one child apparently fully capable of making a life-altering decision but the other is presumed to be immature? Forget the man in this equation; Tyler is an ass. Why can’t we accept that she has agency over her body at 16?
Again, your bias is showing, you might want to pull your skirt down.
From the article that you linked to the figures for minors aged 15-17 having top surgery in the US are: 2.1 per 100,000. The Harvard Study specifically mentioned 15-17, 13 year olds are not mentioned at all in the article. You realize that is what is called, statistically, insignificant, right? What insignificant means statistically is that the number is too small to factor into findings. As I said above, no State allows genital sexual reassignment (or "Bottom") surgery on minors.
Now as to your seeming and urgent desire to prove that a sixteen year old child is ripe for the picking, the current medical consensus among medical professionals both mental health and physicians is that the human brain doesn't reach it's full development until age 21. If you're having difficulty with the math, that means you'll have to wait FIVE years before that little hottie is mature enough actually consent to really get busy with you. What teenager do with other teenagers is between them, the other teens and all the parents involved. but when an adult is involved with a minor, that's rape, regardless of what the "age of consent" is in a specific region.
And remember that the Age of Consent laws were set almost entirely by old white dudes and not by medical professionals, psychologists and, most especially women.
Unlike you I believe women and let them make decisions. (sarc) Isn’t that what I’m supposed to do? And apparently puberty blockers are supposed to begin around age 14 or so.
You appear to advocate for children to permanently alter their bodies sexually but I’m wrong for simply questioning why it’s wrong to accept their decision to engage in sex at all.
My position is that neither of these situations are acceptable. I’d much rather see children be children, unbothered by inappropriate adult behavior, be it “gender affirming” or coital.
I believe in women. Very much so. I also believe in providing them with the protections that allow them the time to learn what they need to know and develop to the extent that they can actually make informed decisions as to consent.
The power dynamics between someone glamorous and powerful like a rock star and a teenage girl, the pressure on her to consent and the extreme likelihood of chemical persuasion makes it a ridiculous argument that a 16 year old can really make an informed consent decision.
But that’s also true of any situation that involves a larger, more mature adult and a 16 year old child. Regardless of what the arbitrary age of consent is in a region, it’s predatory behavior and rape.
According to current AMA standards, puberty blockers can start as early as 12 years old but they rarely start that early because the psych evaluations are usually not sufficiently complete until 13 or 14.
I don’t advocate that children can or should be able to arbitrarily change their gender at 12. That would be ridiculous. However with parental consent and cooperation and psychological and medical assistance, it’s not a choice that should be made by anyone but the child, the parents and medical professionals. Not me, not you and definitely not an extremely biased and vindictive current federal Administration.
I know there is a moral panic happening about trans children right now, but the thing that you are referring to basically does not happen. Trans minors go through a very extensive screening process with doctors and parental consent, and at most are given puberty blockers to prevent irreversible changes to their body before they are able to make informed adult decisions.
It is noteworthy that despite the scrutiny and widespread moral panic about this, there are basically no actually verifiable instances of children falling into some overenthusiastic pipeline and medically transitioning and getting surgery prematurely. Seriously, try to find one. If you dig in on any of the repeated anecdotes in trans youth panic world, you will find they are actually well into adulthood when they transitioned, and that they had many years of medical consultation before making any permanent decisions.
There is a documentary "Look Away" from 2021 that sheds light to the story among many others. It is on Prime BBC. If you can find it on other channels other than Prime let us know because many of us are banning Prime. I canceled my sub but hijacking someone else's to view this.
Thank you very much, Kat. I felt it would be best to keep my mouth shut for a change and let the people involved have their say.
And I totally understand what you mean. After all the things I read for this piece (and there’s plenty I left out due to length), I now find it very difficult to listen to / get through an Aerosmith song.
This is a tough read. And now I have some reading to do based on recommendations. Thanks for covering this sensitive and disturbing story in the fashion you chose. I cannot imagine how alone and betrayed and sad she felt. The fact that he got an addiction -related “free pass” for sex with a minor, forcing a late term abortion, and then abandoning a teen whom he was a guardian of makes me sick.
I wasn’t quite clear on how the condo fire started. Any details?
Thank you for reading, Thea, despite the difficult subject matter. Believe me when I say that researching the story was rough-going as well. I decided on an oral history approach as I felt it was most appropriate. I certainly didn’t want to interfere with anything Julia had to say.
As for how the fire started, that is somewhat unclear. Tyler’s camp alleges that Julia was high and nodded off with a lit cigarette in her hand. Julia, meanwhile, says she remembers letting Ray Tabano into the flat, then “waking up in a cloud of dense smoke fighting for air to breathe”. She goes on in great detail in the article I linked about how she tried to escape by remembering a series of television commercials Bill Cosby (!) had done called ‘Learn Not To Burn’.
Wow. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if Ray was directed to set that fire while she was in the house. But most likely, he left something burning in a drugged-out haze. I’m surprised the fire department didn’t do an arson investigation. Isn’t that standard procedure? Even back then? The world may never know, but it seems like he was hell bent on blaming someone who sounded like she was looking forward to becoming a mother.
i used to like aerosmith then joe perry went off and did his own thing and i never returned to listening to the band...Let the music , do the talkin....
Tyler has lived a life of uncontrolled excess, debauchery, drug use, and general bad behavior. I read his book with fascination at the fact he's still alive. Even by his own admission, he should have been dead a long time ago. His story is far from unique, though. Rock and roll artists have been taking advantage of underage girls (and boys) since Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, and Elvis crossed the line.
Thank you for taking the time to read and comment, Cat. Harrowing story, indeed. Tragic, too. And far too common, I'm afraid.
I am glad to read this. I am more sad than glad to read this. Can’t say I am surprised by it. Can easily say I am disappointed.

Thank you so much, Amy! I thought it was important for many reasons that I stay the hell out of the way this time and let the people involved do the talking. And yeah - Jesus.
Very effective
Jesus is the only hope for redemption people like Tyler have. He sure won’t get it in this world.
“But I don’t wanna kid anybody, because it affected me later when I tried to get my real wife pregnant. “
This bothered me - “my real wife”.
I know he didn’t marry Julie, but damn. I feel so bad for her. She was so young and not one person who should have shielded her did. I hope she wins.
This was brilliant strategy to write this story. You wound these together masterfully. I guess the gist of this was pretty much the way I heard the situation discussed at the time and afterwards. I can’t say anything surprised me or even sounds “off”.

But Tyler still raped a 16 year old child.
If her lawyer is any good I’m sure that was mentioned.
It was actually a lot worse than this in Hollywood, predators everywhere, and sixteen was at least hitting puberty - many were far younger victims.
Yeah, we saw the same thing in the SF Bay Area. Charmers like Sammy Hagar lived in nice suburban towns with tons of hot young things...
Thank you very much, Daniel. It’s a technique I haven’t used before, but felt was appropriate this time around. I’m happy and relieved to hear it was effective.

Steven Tyler’s 77 now. The clock is ticking. And justice moves slow.
His voice is gone, his career over. “Love in an elevator” is just a song title now. Karma can be a bitch.
She was 16. Why the fuck would she need to deflect blame at all.
He didn't “fall in love”, he raped a child.
Repeatedly.
Precisely.
The fact that he doesn't acknowledge how fucking wrong it was disgusts me...
To be fair, I grew up in LA around this time and it was normalized. The Sugar Shack was just up from my home, where Jimmy Page and others would hook up with girls from my high school.
Horrible

I had a crush on a 16 year old when I was 19. I of course knew she was too young for me so I did not act on it at all. A year or two later she was dating and marrying someone way older.
Still married too. Fifty five years later.
It isn’t that he had sex with her. It is what he did after. That is the tort.
If that were the statement of the commenter I replied to, I wouldn’t have had this convo. I don’t even agree with changing the age of consent laws.
Fair enough.

Thank you for mentioning this, Lori. I've seen it and it's excellent. I hope others will watch it as well.
Ugh that was sickening. I just watched it. I have been to Rodney’s apartment and I knew Kim. CRINGE. That bit about Axl Rose was disturbing too.
Is Aerosmith the only band in history that got worse after they sobered up?
Alice Cooper
I really like the way you intermingled the voices in this article Sonny.
Letting each side speak for themselves without interpretation.
I can’t look at Tyler now and not be thinking about how his own words damn him no matter what eventual ruling the court delivers.
I hope it delivers a judgement against him.

Sure seems that way.
This is a tremendous article, really great work. I had no idea about any of this.
Thanks, Parker! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Music is fiction. I’d rather let people’s actions do the talking.

Cleverly written to create the maximum impact.
