I interned for Grand Royal as a teen (got paid in records and tickets to shows for them and the bands on the label- best job ever) and will always have a special spot in my heart for the Beastie Boys who hired people who took a chance on a dorky NYC teen who dared herself to email her resume. Great post, Sonny!
Thanks so much, Lisa! And what a great story! That does sound like the best job ever. And yet another example of just how cool the Beasties were. Thanks again for taking the time to read and share.
I’ve been a fan since the 80s, and cried my eyes out when Adam died (he was my favourite Beastie). Such a brilliant group. “From the Five Boroughs”, their tribute to New York after 911, is brilliant.
This is a nicely-written post. A few years ago I picked up the Beastie Boys Book, randomly lying around at my barbershop, and got sucked in. These were normal and kind of nerdy guys who loved what they were doing and could never quite believe that they were hitting it big and would not stop having fun doing it. Their writing is so vivid and good that it's straight-up literary. Made me love the Beasties, and you're right - it's a real loss that it's over and that it ended so suddenly.
I grew up listening to Beastie Boys and was heartbroken with Yauch died. It wasn’t until I watched the show on Apple TV, A Beastie Boys Story, that I fully realized the impact they had on me. I was sobbing. Like ugly crying. Highly recommend that show if you haven’t seen it.
Thanks for this Sonny. I love The Beastie Boys. Paul's Boutique is an album I covet. Their energy was unsurpassed. So sad about Yauch. Life can be so arbitrarily cruel.

Great article, Sonny.
Thank you, Sheila. I’ve been a fan since way back too. Still find it hard to accept they’ll never record again.
Are you aware of contemporary 80's psuedo rivals the Yeastie Girlz?

Yes
Thanks for this.

Thank you, Eric. I completely agree with you about the book. I’d also recommend the audiobook version. It’s frikkin’ awesome.

I love them too, Nadine. They were a huge influence on me. Still not over it, to be honest.
