Yes! Nice to see some love for this band that seems to have faded into obscurity. I recall fond memories of when this song first hit radio. I was only a kid but I do remember eventually seeing the video pop up on MuchMusic. Ah, those were the days.
Yup. Loved this song the moment I heard it. I was just a kid when it came out too, and used to watch MuchMusic religiously. I had the biggest crush on Erica Ehm lol.
Have you ever read the book on the history of MuchMusic - Is This Live?: Inside the Wild Early Years of MuchMusic: The Nation's Music Station by Christopher Ward? It is an excellent read by someone who was there when it all played out and he got access to many of the VJs and people behind the scenes. A fascinating read to be sure!
I was always a big fan of CITY LIMITS and later THE WEDGE.
Definitely! I discovered CITY LIMITS at just the right time when I getting to alternative rock music. I still have a couple of VHS tapes full of music videos I taped off the show (and THE WEDGE).
Ragging on Can Con, while also praising particular Can Con is one of my favorite national pastimes. I was so overjoyed to find this on 45 out digging through an out of the way record store in an industrial park in BC, for the mere price of a toonie, as a used 45 should rightfully be. It's a song I think of and wonder if I've overplayed it and then put on and determine that would be impossible.
You’re totally right. Which is to say, I agree. I’ve played Echo Beach countless times throughout my life, and must have listened to it another ten-twelve times while writing this piece. Could’ve easily listened to it that many more and still proceeded to cut a rug. And yes! 2 bucks for a used 45 is absolutely the perfect price.
It's so interesting to read different posts about the same song. I enjoyed this very much. When I wrote mine, I didn't even think about chart position in other countries so thanks for adding that detail.
Another brilliant post Sonny! And, also, I did not know you were a fellow Canuck! I should have guessed And, in a weird sort of kismet, I wrote about Can Con in a recent post. Not really about Can Con, but I mentioned it. You must be a kindred spirit. Anyhow, damn, I love this song in all its muffiny goodness. What a great pick for July! Thanks!
Thanks so much, Nadine, you’re far too kind! And yes, I am a fellow hoser! What a strange and wonderful coincidence that we both touched upon Can Con of all things. I’m off to read your post right now!
That's hilarious, thank you.

Thanks for the kind words! Will definitely check out those links.
Thanks Nick. Kelly also recently wrote about the song. It seems to be having a moment.

No, I haven’t! I absolutely love Christopher Ward and will definitely be picking up a copy of his book.
I was a huge fan of City Limits as well. Always amazing, always entertaining, and rather groundbreaking as well.

I love this song too. Just discovered your newsletter. I love Canada so this can't go wrong :-)
Welcome to the Jukebox! Good to have you, eh :)

Thank you so much! I just read your take and enjoyed it as well. It never ceases to amaze me how differently the same song can inspire people.
